The 49ers might have finished 6-10 on the season, but thanks to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his 5-0 record as the team’s starting quarterback in December, San Francisco is likely to be a trendy pick to make the playoffs next year.

But before any of that can happen, the 49ers need to sign the 26-year-old quarterback to a 2018 contract.

Garoppolo is a free agent, and while the 49ers have made it clear that they will not let him test the open market — they’re more than happy to slap a franchise tag on him for next year — there are questions about how valuable the quarterback really is.

If the 49ers were to franchise tag Garoppolo, they’d pay him more than $23 million in 2018. Two years of franchise tags would add up to roughly $52 million — all guaranteed.

Tom Brady’s hand injury is unlikely to keep him off the field against the Jaguars, but it’s hard to believe that it won’t be a factor in the game — particularly against a team with a ferocious pass rush like Jacksonville.
