After a vicious high shot that took James Tedesco out of the Sydney Roosters’ match against Parramatta on Thursday night, Bailey Simonsson left fans and analysts wondering why he wasn’t sent off instead of sin-binned. In the 24th minute of the Roosters’ 28-20 victory, Simonsson hit Tedesco late and high. The Eels winger raced in and caught Tedesco in the face with his shoulder.

Following his ninth concussion of his career, the Roosters fullback failed his HIA (Head Injury Assessment) and did not return to the game. For his conduct, Simonsson received ten minutes in the sin bin; nonetheless, many were shocked that he was not sent off for the remainder of the game.

After seeing the replays, Roosters coach Trent Robinson subsequently remarked that he was “ropeable” and that Simonsson wasn’t sent out at the moment. “It was disheartening to lose Teddy at such a young age, and the communication—well, I’m not sure, to be honest—was upsetting because, at the time, I felt like I was expecting a farewell.

“I was a little more divided about my thoughts when I looked at it after the game and took some time to look at it. That’s where it ended up, I suppose.
